The Bhagavad Gita, often called the "Song of God," is a 700-verse sacred Hindu scripture embedded within the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. It is a philosophical dialogue between the warrior Arjuna and his charioteer, the god Krishna, offering profound guidance on duty, ethics, and spiritual liberation.

Chapter 11: Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga

The Yoga of the Cosmic Vision

Verse #1
अर्जुन उवाच मदनुग्रहाय परमं गुह्यम् |
अध्यात्मसंज्ञितम् यत् त्वया उक्तं वचः |
तेन मोहः अयम् विगतः मम ||
arjuna uvāca madanugrahāya paramaṃ guhyam |
adhyātmasaṃjñitam yat tvayā uktam vacaḥ |
tena mohaḥ ayam vigataḥ mama ||
arjuna uvaca madanugrahaya parama guhyam |
adhyatmasajnitam yat tvaya uktam vaca |
tena moha ayam vigata mama ||
Arjuna Said: By this word of the highest secret concerning the Self, which You have spoken out of compassion towards me, my delusion is gone.
Verse #2
भवाप्ययौ हि भूतानां श्रुतौ विस्तरशः मया |
त्वत्तः कमलपत्राक्ष माहात्म्यम् अपि अव्ययम् ||
bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṃ śrutau vistaraśaḥ mayā |
tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa māhātmyam api ca avyayam ||
bhavapyayau hi bhutana srutau vistarasa maya |
tvatta kamalapatraksa mahatmyam api ca avyayam ||
The origin and destruction of beings verily, have been heard by me in detail from You, O Lotus-eyed Krishna, and also Your inexhaustible greatness.
Verse #3
एवम् एतत् यथा अत्थ त्वम् आत्मानम् परमेश्वर |
द्रष्टुम् इच्छामि ते रूपम् ऐश्वरम् पुरुषोत्तम ||
evam etat yathā attha tvam ātmānam parameśvara |
draṣṭum icchāmi te rūpam aiśvaram puruṣottama ||
evam etat yatha attha tvam atmanam paramesvara |
drastum icchami te rupam aisvaram purusottama ||
(Now) O Supreme Lord! As you have thus described Yourself, I wish to see (actually) Your Form Divine, O PURUSHOTTAMA.
Verse #4
मन्यसे यदि तत् शक्यम् मया द्रष्टुम् इति प्रभो |
योगेश्वर ततः मे त्वं दर्शय आत्मानम् अव्ययम् ||
manyase yadi tat śakyam mayā draṣṭum prabho |
yogeśvara tataḥ me tvaṃ darśaya ātmānam avyayam ||
manyase yadi tat sakyam maya drastum prabho |
yogesvara tata me tva darsaya atmanam avyayam ||
If you, O Lord, think it possible for me to see It, do You please, then, O Lord of YOGAS, show me Your Imperishable Self-form.
Verse #5
श्रीभगवान् उवाच पश्य मे |
पार्थ रूपाणि शतशः अथ सहस्रशः |
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि ||
śrībhagavān uvāca paśya me |
pārtha rūpāṇi śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ |
nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca ||
sribhagavan uvaca pasya me |
partha rupani satasa atha sahasrasa |
nanavidhani divyani nanavarnaktini ca ||
he Blessed Lord said: Behold, O Partha, forms of Me, by hundreds and thousands, of different sorts Divine, of various colours and shapes.
Verse #6
पश्य आदित्यान् वसून् रुद्रान् अश्विनौ मरुतः |
तथा बहूनि अदृष्टपूर्वाणि पश्य आश्चर्याणि भारत ||
paśya ādityān vasūn rudrān aśvinau marutaḥ |
tathā bahūni adṛṣṭapūrvāṇi paśya āścaryāṇi bhārata ||
pasya adityan vasun rudran asvinau maruta |
tatha bahuni adstapurvani pasya ascaryani bharata ||
Behold the ADITYAS, the VASUS, the RUDRAS, the (two) ASHWINS and also the MARUTS; behold many wonders never seen before, O Bharata.
Verse #7
इह एकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं पश्य अद्य सचराचरम् मम |
देहे गुडाकेश यत् अन्यत् द्रष्टुम् इच्छसि ||
iha ekasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ paśya adya sacarācaram mama |
dehe guḍākeśa yat ca anyat draṣṭum icchasi ||
iha ekastha jagatktsna pasya adya sacaracaram mama |
dehe guakesa yat ca anyat drastum icchasi ||
Now behold, O Gudakesha, in this Body, that the whole universe centres in One --- including, the moving and the unmoving --- and whatever else you desire to see.
Verse #8
तु माम् शक्यसे द्रष्टुम् अनेन एव स्वचक्षुषा |
दिव्यम् ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगम् ऐश्वरम् ||
na tu mām śakyase draṣṭum anena eva svacakṣuṣā |
divyam dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogam aiśvaram ||
na tu mam sakyase drastum anena eva svacaksusa |
divyam dadami te caksu pasya me yogam aisvaram ||
But You are not able to behold Me with these Your own eyes; I give You the divine-eye; behold My lordly YOGA.
Verse #9
सञ्जय उवाच एवम् उक्त्वा |
ततः राजन् महायोगेश्वरः हरिः दर्शयामास |
पार्थाय परमं रूपम् ऐश्वरम् ||
sañjaya uvāca evam uktvā |
tataḥ rājan mahāyogeśvaraḥ hariḥ darśayāmāsa |
pārthāya paramaṃ rūpam aiśvaram ||
sanjaya uvaca evam uktva |
tata rajan mahayogesvara hari darsayamasa |
parthaya parama rupam aisvaram ||
Sanjaya said: Having thus spoken, O King, the great Lord of YOGA, Hari, showed to Partha His Supreme Form, as the Lord (of the Universe).

अनेकवक्त्रनयनम् |
अनेकाद्भुतदर्शनम् अनेकदिव्याभरणम् दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम् ||
anekavaktranayanam |
anekādbhutadarśanam anekadivyābharaṇam divyānekodyatāyudham ||
anekavaktranayanam |
anekadbhutadarsanam anekadivyabharanam divyanekodyatayudham ||
With numerous mouths and eyes, with numerous wonderful sights, with numerous divine ornaments, with numerous divine weapons uplifted (such a form He showed).

दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनम् सर्वाश्चर्यमयम् |
देवम् अनन्तम् विश्वतोमुखम् ||
divyamālyāmbaradharam divyagandhānulepanam sarvāścaryamayam |
devam anantam viśvatomukham ||
divyamalyambaradharam divyagandhanulepanam sarvascaryamayam |
devam anantam visvatomukham ||
Wearing divine garlands (necklaces) and apparel, anointed with divine unguents, the All-wonderful, Resplendent, Endless, facing all sides.
Verse #12
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेत् युगपदुत्थिता यदि भाः |
सदृशी सा स्यात् भासः तस्य महात्मनः ||
divi sūryasahasrasya bhavet yugapadutthitā yadi bhāḥ |
sadṛśī sā syāt bhāsaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ ||
divi suryasahasrasya bhavet yugapadutthita yadi bha |
sadsi sa syat bhasa tasya mahatmana ||
If the splendour of a thousand Suns was to blaze all at once (simultaneously) in the sky, that would be like the splendour of that Mighty Being (great soul).
Verse #13
तत्र एकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं प्रविभक्तम् अनेकधा |
अपश्यत् देवदेवस्य शरीरे पाण्डवः तदा ||
tatra ekasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ pravibhaktam anekadhā |
apaśyat devadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavaḥ tadā ||
tatra ekastha jagatktsna pravibhaktam anekadha |
apasyat devadevasya sarire panava tada ||
There, in the body of the God of gods, the Pandava (Son of Pandu) then saw the whole Universe resting in one, with all its infinite parts.
Verse #14
ततः विस्मयाविष्टः हृष्टरोमा धनञ्जयः |
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवम् कृताञ्जलिः अभाषत ||
tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭaḥ hṛṣṭaromā dhanañjayaḥ |
praṇamya śirasā devam kṛtāñjaliḥ abhāṣata ||
tata sa vismayavista hstaroma dhananjaya |
pranamya sirasa devam ktanjali abhasata ||
Then, Dhananjaya, filled with wonder, with his hair standing on end, bowed down his head to the God and spoke with joined palms.
Verse #15
अर्जुन उवाच पश्यामि देवान् |
तव देव देहे सर्वान् |
तथा भूतविशेषसङ्घान् ब्रह्माणम् ईशम् |
कमलासनस्थम् ऋषीन् सर्वान् |
उरगान् दिव्यान् ||
arjuna uvāca paśyāmi devān |
tava deva dehe sarvān |
tathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān brahmāṇam īśam |
kamalāsanastham ṛṣīn ca sarvān |
uragān ca divyān ||
arjuna uvaca pasyami devan |
tava deva dehe sarvan |
tatha bhutavisesasanghan brahmanam isam |
kamalasanastham sin ca sarvan |
uragan ca divyan ||
Arjuna said: I see all the gods, O God, in Your body, and (also) hosts of various classes of beings. BRAHMA, the Lord of Creation, seated on the Lotus, all the RISHIS and celestial serpents.
Verse #16
अनेकबाहूदरवक्त्रनेत्रम् पश्यामि त्वाम् सर्वतः |
अनन्तरूपम् अन्तम् |
मध्यम् पुनः तव |
आदिम् पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप ||
anekabāhūdaravaktranetram paśyāmi tvām sarvataḥ |
anantarūpam na antam na |
madhyam na punaḥ tava |
ādim paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa ||
anekabahudaravaktranetram pasyami tvam sarvata |
anantarupam na antam na |
madhyam na puna tava |
adim pasyami visvesvara visvarupa ||
I see Thee of boundless form on every side, with manifold arms, stomachs, mouths and eyes; neither the end, nor the middle, nor also the beginning do I see; O, Lord of the Universe, O, Cosmic-Form.
Verse #17
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रिणं |
तेजोराशिं सर्वतः |
दीप्तिमन्तम् पश्यामि त्वां दुर्निरीक्ष्यम् |
समन्तात् दीप्तानलार्कद्युतिम् अप्रमेयम् ||
kirīṭinam gadinam cakriṇam |
ca tejorāśim sarvataḥ |
dīptimantam paśyāmi tvāṃ durnirīkṣyam |
samantāt dīptānalārkadyutim aprameyam ||
kiritinam gadinam cakrinam |
ca tejorasim sarvata |
diptimantam pasyami tva durniriksyam |
samantat diptanalarkadyutim aprameyam ||
I see Thee with Crown, Club, and Discus; a mass of radiance shining everywhere, very hard to look at, all round blazing like burning fire and Sun, and incomprehensible.
Verse #18
त्वम् अक्षरम् परमम् वेदितव्यम् |
त्वम् अस्य विश्वस्य परम् |
निधानम् त्वम् अव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्ता सनातनः |
त्वम् पुरुषः मतः मे ||
tvam akṣaram paramam veditavyam |
tvam asya viśvasya param |
nidhānam tvam avyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā sanātanaḥ |
tvam puruṣaḥ mataḥ me ||
tvam aksaram paramam veditavyam |
tvam asya visvasya param |
nidhanam tvam avyaya sasvatadharmagopta sanatana |
tvam purusa mata me ||
You are the Imperishable, the Supreme Being worthy to be known. You are the great treasure-house of this Universe. You are the imperishable Protector of the Eternal DHARMA. In my opinion, You are the Ancient PURUSHA.

अनादिमध्यान्तम् |
अनन्तवीर्यम् |
अनन्तबाहुम् |
शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् पश्यामि त्वाम् दीप्तहुताशवक्त्रम् स्वतेजसा विश्वम् इदम् तपन्तम् ||
anādimadhyāntam |
anantavīryam |
anantabāhum |
śaśisūryanetram paśyāmi tvām dīptahutāśavaktram svatejasā viśvam idam tapantam ||
anadimadhyantam |
anantaviryam |
anantabahum |
sasisuryanetram pasyami tvam diptahutasavaktram svatejasa visvam idam tapantam ||
I see You without beginning, middle, or end, infinite in power, of endless arms, the sun and moon being Your eyes, the burning fire Your mouth, heating the whole universe with Your radiance.
Verse #20
द्यावा पृथिव्योः इदम् अन्तरम् हि |
व्याप्तम् त्वया एकेन दिशः |
सर्वाः दृष्ट्वा अद्भुतम् रूपम् उग्रम् |
तव इदम् लोकत्रयम् प्रव्यथितम् महात्मन् ||
dyāvā pṛthivyoḥ idam antaram hi |
vyāptam tvayā ekena diśaḥ ca |
sarvāḥ dṛṣṭvā adbhutam rūpam ugram |
tava idam lokatrayam pravyathitam mahātman ||
dyava pthivyo idam antaram hi |
vyaptam tvaya ekena disa ca |
sarva dstva adbhutam rupam ugram |
tava idam lokatrayam pravyathitam mahatman ||
This space between earth and the heavens and all the quarters is filled by You alone; having seen this, Your wonderful and terrible form, the three worlds are trembling with fear, O great-souled Being.
Verse #21
अमी हि त्वाम् सुरसङ्घाः |
विशन्ति केचित् भीताः प्राञ्जलयः |
गृणन्ति स्वस्ति इति उक्त्वा महर्षिसिद्धसङ्घाः |
स्तुवन्ति त्वाम् स्तुतिभिः पुष्कलाभिः ||
amī hi tvām surasaṅghāḥ |
viśanti kecit bhītāḥ prāñjalayaḥ |
gṛṇanti svasti uktvā maharṣisiddhasaṅghāḥ |
stuvanti tvām stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ ||
ami hi tvam surasangha |
visanti kecit bhita pranjalaya |
gnanti svasti uktva maharsisiddhasangha |
stuvanti tvam stutibhi puskalabhi ||
Verily, into You enter these hosts of DEVAS; some extol You in fear with joined palms; May it be well thus saying bands of great RISHIS and SIDDHAS praise You with hymns sublime.

रुद्र आदित्या वसवः ये साध्याः |
विश्वे अश्विनौ मरुतः उष्मपाः |
गन्धर्व यक्ष असुर सिद्ध सङ्घाः वीक्षन्ते |
त्वाम् विस्मिताः एव सर्वे ||
rudra ādityā vasavaḥ ye ca sādhyāḥ |
viśve aśvinau marutaḥ ca uṣmapāḥ ca |
gandharva yakṣa asura siddha saṅghāḥ vīkṣante |
tvām vismitāḥ ca eva sarve ||
rudra aditya vasava ye ca sadhya |
visve asvinau maruta ca usmapa ca |
gandharva yaksa asura siddha sangha viksante |
tvam vismita ca eva sarve ||
THE RUDRAS, ADITYAS, VASUS, SADHYAS, VISHWE-DEVAS, THE TWO ASHWINS, MARUTS, USHMAPAS AND HOSTS OF GANDHARVAS, YAKSHAS, ASURAS AND SIDDHAS --- they are all looking at you, all quite astonished.

रूपं महत् ते |
बहुवक्त्रनेत्रम् महाबाहो बहुबाहूरुपादम् |
बहूदरम् बहुदंष्ट्राकरालम् दृष्ट्वा लोकाः |
प्रव्यथिताः तथा अहम् ||
rūpam mahat te |
bahuvaktranetram mahābāho bahubāhūrupādam |
bahūdaram bahudaṃṣṭrākarālam dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ |
pravyathitāḥ tathā aham ||
rupam mahat te |
bahuvaktranetram mahabaho bahubahurupadam |
bahudaram bahudastrakaralam dstva loka |
pravyathita tatha aham ||
Having seen Your immeasurable Form, with many mouths and eyes, O Mighty-armed, with many arms, thighs, and feet, with many stomachs and fearsome with many tusks, the worlds are terrified and so too am I.
Verse #24
नभःस्पृशं दीप्तम् अनेकवर्णम् व्यात्ताननम् |
दीप्तविशालनेत्रम् दृष्ट्वा हि त्वाम् |
प्रव्यथितान्तरात्मा धृतिं विन्दामि |
शमं विष्णो ||
nabhaḥspṛśam dīptam anekavarṇam vyāttānanam |
dīptaviśālanetram dṛṣṭvā hi tvām |
pravyathitāntarātmā dhṛtim na vindāmi |
śamam ca viṣṇo ||
nabhaspsam diptam anekavarnam vyattananam |
diptavisalanetram dstva hi tvam |
pravyathitantaratma dhtim na vindami |
samam ca visno ||
On seeing you, with Your Form touching the sky, flaming in many colours, with mouths wide open, with large fiery eyes, I am terrified at heart, and I find neither courage, nor peace, O Vishnu!
Verse #25
दंष्ट्राकरालानि ते मुखानि |
दृष्ट्वा एव कालानलसन्निभानि दिशः |
जाने लभे |
शर्म प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ||
daṃṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni |
dṛṣṭvā eva kālānalasannibhāni diśaḥ |
na jāne na labhe ca |
śarma prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ||
dastrakaralani ca te mukhani |
dstva eva kalanalasannibhani disa |
na jane na labhe ca |
sarma prasida devesa jagannivasa ||
Having seen your mouths fearsome with tusks (blazing) like PRALAYA fires, I know not the four quarters, nor do I find peace; be gracious, O Lord of the DEVAS, O Abode of the Universe.
Verse #26
अमी त्वां धृतराष्ट्रस्य |
पुत्राः सर्वे सहैव वनिपालसङ्घैः |
भीष्मः द्रोणः सूतपुत्रः तथा असौ |
सह अस्मदीयैः अपि योधमुख्यैः ||
amī ca tvāṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya |
putrāḥ sarve sahaiva vanipālasaṅghaiḥ |
bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ sūtaputraḥ tathā asau |
saha asmadīyaiḥ api yodhamukhyaiḥ ||
ami ca tva dhtarastrasya |
putra sarve sahaiva vanipalasanghai |
bhisma drona sutaputra tatha asau |
saha asmadiyai api yodhamukhyai ||
All the sons of Dhritarashtra with hosts of kings of the earth, Bhishma, Drona and the son of a charioteer, Karna, with the warrior chieftains of ours;
Verse #27
वक्त्राणि ते त्वरमाणाः |
विशन्ति दंष्ट्राकरालानि भयानकानि |
केचित् विलग्नाः दशनान्तरेषु |
सन्दृश्यन्ते चूर्णितैः उत्तमाङ्गैः ||
vaktrāṇi te tvaramāṇāḥ |
viśanti daṃṣṭrākarālāni bhayānakāni |
kecit vilagnāḥ daśanāntareṣu |
sandṛśyante cūrṇitaiḥ uttamāṅgaiḥ ||
vaktrani te tvaramana |
visanti dastrakaralani bhayanakani |
kecit vilagna dasanantaresu |
sandsyante curnitai uttamangai ||
Into Your mouths, with terrible teeth, and fearful to behold, they precipitately enter. Some are found sticking in the gaps between the teeth with their heads crushed into pulp.
Verse #28
यथा नदीनाम् बहवः अम्बुवेगाः |
समुद्रम् एव अभिमुखाः द्रवन्ति |
तथा तव अमी नरलोकवीराः |
विशन्ति वक्त्राणि अभिविज्वलन्ति ||
yathā nadīnām bahavaḥ ambuvegāḥ |
samudram eva abhimukhāḥ dravanti |
tathā tava amī naralokavīrāḥ |
viśanti vaktrāṇi abhivijvalanti ||
yatha nadinam bahava ambuvega |
samudram eva abhimukha dravanti |
tatha tava ami naralokavira |
visanti vaktrani abhivijvalanti ||
Verily, as many torrents of rivers flow towards the ocean, so these heroes in the world of men enter Your flaming mouths.
Verse #29
यथा प्रदीप्तं ज्वलनं पतङ्गाः |
विशन्ति नाशाय समृद्धवेगाः तथैव |
नाशाय विशन्ति लोकाः तव |
अपि वक्त्राणि समृद्धवेगाः ||
yathā pradīptaṃ jvalanaṃ pataṅgāḥ |
viśanti nāśāya samṛddhavegāḥ tathaiva |
nāśāya viśanti lokāḥ tava |
api vaktrāṇi samṛddhavegāḥ ||
yatha pradipta jvalana patanga |
visanti nasaya samddhavega tathaiva |
nasaya visanti loka tava |
api vaktrani samddhavega ||
Arjuna says: As moths rush hurriedly into a blazing fire for their own destruction, so also these creatures hastily rush into Your mouths of destruction.
Verse #30
लेलिह्यसे ग्रसमानः समन्तात् लोकान् |
समग्रान् वदनैः ज्वलद्भिः तेजोभिः |
आपूर्य जगत् समग्रम् भासः |
तव उग्राः प्रतपन्ति विष्णो ||
lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantāt lokān |
samagrān vadanaiḥ jvaladbhiḥ tejobhiḥ |
āpūrya jagat samagram bhāsaḥ |
tava ugrāḥ pratapanti viṣṇo ||
lelihyase grasamana samantat lokan |
samagran vadanai jvaladbhi tejobhi |
apurya jagat samagram bhasa |
tava ugra pratapanti visno ||
Devouring all worlds on every side with Your flaming mouths, You are licking (in enjoyment). Your fierce rays, filling the whole world with radiance, are burning, O Vishnu.
Verse #31
आख्याहि मे कः भवान् उग्ररूपः |
नमः अस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद |
विज्ञातुम् इच्छामि भवन्तम् आद्यं |
हि प्रजानामि तव प्रवृत्तिम् ||
ākhyāhi me kaḥ bhavān ugrarūpaḥ |
namaḥ astu te devavara prasīda |
vijñātum icchāmi bhavantam ādyaṃ na |
hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim ||
akhyahi me ka bhavan ugrarupa |
nama astu te devavara prasida |
vijnatum icchami bhavantam adya na |
hi prajanami tava pravttim ||
Tell me, who You are, so fierce in form? Salutations to You, O God Supreme; have mercy. I desire to know You, the Original Being, I know not indeed Your purpose.
Verse #32
श्रीभगवानुवाच कालः अस्मि लोकक्षयकृत् |
प्रवृद्धः लोकान् समाहर्तुम् इह |
प्रवृत्तः ऋते अपि त्वाम् |
भविष्यन्ति सर्वे ये |
अवस्थिताः प्रत्यनीकेषु योधाः ||
śrībhagavānuvāca kālaḥ asmi lokakṣayakṛt |
pravṛddhaḥ lokān samāhartum iha |
pravṛttaḥ ṛte api tvām |
na bhaviṣyanti sarve ye |
avasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ ||
sribhagavanuvaca kala asmi lokaksayakt |
pravddha lokan samahartum iha |
pravtta te api tvam |
na bhavisyanti sarve ye |
avasthita pratyanikesu yodha ||
The Blessed Lord said: I am the mighty world-destroying Time, now engaged in destroying the worlds. Even without You, none of the warriors arrayed in hostile armies shall live.
Verse #33
तस्मात् त्वम् उत्तिष्ठ यशः लभस्व |
जित्वा शत्रून् भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यम् |
समृद्धम् मया एव एते निहताः |
पूर्वम् निमित्तमात्रम् भव सव्यसाचिन् ||
tasmāt tvam uttiṣṭha yaśaḥ labhasva |
jitvā śatrūn bhuṅkṣva rājyam |
samṛddham mayā eva ete nihatāḥ |
pūrvam nimittamātram bhava savyasācin ||
tasmat tvam uttistha yasa labhasva |
jitva satrun bhunksva rajyam |
samddham maya eva ete nihata |
purvam nimittamatram bhava savyasacin ||
Therefore, stand up, and obtain fame. Conquer the enemies and enjoy the flourishing kingdom. Verily by Myself they have already been slain; be you a mere instrument, O left-handed archer.
Verse #34
द्रोणं भीष्मं जयद्रथं |
कर्णं तथा अन्यान् अपि |
योधवीरान् मया हतान् त्वं जहि मा |
व्यथिष्ठा युध्यस्व जेतासि रणे सपत्नान् ||
droṇam ca bhīṣmam ca jayadratham |
ca karṇam tathā anyān api |
yodhavīrān mayā hatān tvaṃ jahi mā |
vyathiṣṭhā yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān ||
dronam ca bhismam ca jayadratham |
ca karnam tatha anyan api |
yodhaviran maya hatan tva jahi ma |
vyathistha yudhyasva jetasi rane sapatnan ||
Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna, and other brave warriors --- those have already been slain by Me; you do kill; be not distressed with fear; fight and you shall conquer your enemies in battle.
Verse #35
सञ्जय उवाच एतत् |
श्रुत्वा वचनं केशवस्य कृताञ्जलिः |
वेपमानः किरीटी नमस्कृत्वा |
भूयः एव आह कृष्णं |
सगद्गदम् भीतभीतः प्रणम्य ||
sañjaya uvāca etat |
śrutvā vacanaṃ keśavasya kṛtāñjaliḥ |
vepamānaḥ kirīṭī namaskṛtvā |
bhūyaḥ eva āha kṛṣṇam |
sagadgadam bhītabhītaḥ praṇamya ||
sanjaya uvaca etat |
srutva vacana kesavasya ktanjali |
vepamana kiriti namasktva |
bhuya eva aha ksnam |
sagadgadam bhitabhita pranamya ||
Sanjaya said: Having heard that speech of Keshava (Krishna), the crowned-one (Arjuna), with joined palms, trembling and prostrating himself, again addressed Krishna, in a choked voice, bowing down, overwhelmed with fear.
Verse #36
अर्जुन उवाच स्थाने हृषीकेश |
तव प्रकीर्त्या जगत् प्रहृष्यति |
अनुरज्यते रक्षांसि |
भीतानि दिशः द्रवन्ति सर्वे |
नमस्यन्ति सिद्धसङ्घाः ||
arjuna uvāca sthāne hṛṣīkeśa |
tava prakīrtyā jagat prahṛṣyati |
anurajyate ca rakṣāṃsi |
bhītāni diśaḥ dravanti sarve |
namasyanti ca siddhasaṅghāḥ ||
arjuna uvaca sthane hsikesa |
tava prakirtya jagat prahsyati |
anurajyate ca raksasi |
bhitani disa dravanti sarve |
namasyanti ca siddhasangha ||
Arjuna said: It is but meet, O Hrishikesha (Krishna), that the world delights and rejoices in Thy praise; RAKSHASAS fly in fear to all quarters, and all hosts of SIDDHAS bow to Thee.
Verse #37
कस्मात् ते नमेरन् |
महात्मन् गरीयसे ब्रह्मणः अपि आदिकर्त्रे |
अनन्त देवेश जगन्निवास त्वम् अक्षरम् |
सदसत् तत् परम् यत् ||
kasmāt ca te na nameran |
mahātman garīyase brahmaṇaḥ api ādikartre |
ananta deveśa jagannivāsa tvam akṣaram |
sadasat tat param yat ||
kasmat ca te na nameran |
mahatman gariyase brahmana api adikartre |
ananta devesa jagannivasa tvam aksaram |
sadasat tat param yat ||
And why should they not, O Great-souled One, bow to Thee, greater (than all else), the Primal Cause even of Brahma, O Infinite Being, O Lord of Lords, O Abode of the Universe, You are the Imperishable, that which is beyond both the Manifest and the Unmanifest.
Verse #38
त्वम् आदिदेवः पुरुषः पुराणः त्वम् |
अस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम् वेत्ता |
असि वेद्यम् परं |
धाम त्वया ततम् विश्वम् अनन्तरूप ||
tvam ādidevaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇaḥ tvam |
asya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam vettā |
asi vedyam ca paraṃ ca |
dhāma tvayā tatam viśvam anantarūpa ||
tvam adideva purusa purana tvam |
asya visvasya para nidhanam vetta |
asi vedyam ca para ca |
dhama tvaya tatam visvam anantarupa ||
You are the Primal God, the Ancient PURUSHA; You are the Supreme Refuge of this universe. You are the knower, the knowable, and the Abode-Supreme. By Thee is the universe pervaded, O Being of Infinite forms.
Verse #39
वायुः यमः अग्निः वरुणः शशाङ्कः |
प्रजापतिः त्वं प्रपितामहः नमः |
नमः ते अस्तु सहस्रकृत्वः पुनः |
भूयः अपि नमः नमः ते ||
vāyuḥ yamaḥ agniḥ varuṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ |
prajāpatiḥ tvaṃ prapitāmahaḥ ca namaḥ |
namaḥ te astu sahasrakṛtvaḥ punaḥ ca |
bhūyaḥ api namaḥ namaḥ te ||
vayu yama agni varuna sasanka |
prajapati tva prapitamaha ca nama |
nama te astu sahasraktva puna ca |
bhuya api nama nama te ||
You are VAYU, YAMA, AGNI, VARUNA, the Moon, PRAJAPATI, and the great-grandfather of all. Salutations! Salutations unto You a thousand times, and again salutations unto You!
Verse #40
नमः पुरस्तात् अथ पृष्ठतः ते |
नमः अस्तु ते सर्वतः एव |
सर्व अनन्तवीर्य अमितविक्रम त्वं सर्वम् |
समाप्नोषि ततः असि सर्वः ||
namaḥ purastāt atha pṛṣṭhataḥ te |
namaḥ astu te sarvataḥ eva |
sarva anantavīrya amitavikrama tvaṃ sarvam |
samāpnoṣi tataḥ asi sarvaḥ ||
nama purastat atha psthata te |
nama astu te sarvata eva |
sarva anantavirya amitavikrama tva sarvam |
samapnosi tata asi sarva ||
Salutations to You, before and behind! Salutations to You on every side! O All! You, Infinite in Power, and Infinite in Prowess, pervade all; wherefore You are the All.
Verse #41
सखेति मत्वा प्रसभं यदुक्तं हे |
कृष्ण हे यादव हे सखेति |
अजानता महिमानं तव इदं मया |
प्रमादात् प्रणयेन वा अपि ||
sakheti matvā prasabhaṃ yaduktaṃ he |
kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti |
ajānatā mahimānaṃ tava idaṃ mayā |
pramādāt praṇayena vā api ||
sakheti matva prasabha yadukta he |
ksna he yadava he sakheti |
ajanata mahimana tava ida maya |
pramadat pranayena va api ||
Whatever I have rashly said from carelessness or love, addressing You as O Krishna O Yadava O friend and regarding You merely as a friend, unknowing of this greatness of Yours ... ,
Verse #42
यत् अवहासार्थम् असत्कृतः असि |
विहार शय्या आसन भोजनेषु एकः |
अथवा अपि अच्युत तत् समक्षम् |
तत्क्षामये त्वाम् अहम् अप्रमेयम् ||
yat ca avahāsārtham asatkṛtaḥ asi |
vihāra śayyā āsana bhojaneṣu ekaḥ |
athavā api acyuta tat samakṣam |
tatkṣāmaye tvām aham aprameyam ||
yat ca avahasartham asatkta asi |
vihara sayya asana bhojanesu eka |
athava api acyuta tat samaksam |
tatksamaye tvam aham aprameyam ||
In whatever way I may have insulted You for the sake of fun, while at play, reposing or sitting, or at meals, when alone (with You), O Achyuta, or in company --- that, O Immeasurable One, I implore You to forgive.
Verse #43
पिता असि लोकस्य चराचरस्य त्वम् |
अस्य पूज्यः गुरुः गरीयान् |
त्वत्समः अस्ति अभ्यधिकः कुतः |
अन्यः लोकत्रये अपि अप्रतिमप्रभाव ||
pitā asi lokasya carācarasya tvam |
asya pūjyaḥ ca guruḥ garīyān |
na tvatsamaḥ asti abhyadhikaḥ kutaḥ |
anyaḥ lokatraye api apratimaprabhāva ||
pita asi lokasya caracarasya tvam |
asya pujya ca guru gariyan |
na tvatsama asti abhyadhika kuta |
anya lokatraye api apratimaprabhava ||
You are the Father of this world, moving and unmoving. You are to be adored by this world. You are the greatest GURU, (for) there exists none who is equal to You; how can there be then another, superior to You in the three worlds, O Being of unequalled power?
Verse #44
तस्मात् प्रणम्य प्रणिधाय कायम् प्रसादये |
त्वाम् अहम् ईशम् ईड्यम् पिता |
इव पुत्रस्य सखा इव सख्युः |
प्रियः प्रियाय अर्हसि देव सोढुम् ||
tasmāt praṇamya praṇidhāya kāyam prasādaye |
tvām aham īśam īḍyam pitā |
iva putrasya sakhā iva sakhyuḥ |
priyaḥ priyāya arhasi deva soḍhum ||
tasmat pranamya pranidhaya kayam prasadaye |
tvam aham isam iyam pita |
iva putrasya sakha iva sakhyu |
priya priyaya arhasi deva sohum ||
Therefore, bowing down, prostrating my body, I crave your forgiveness, adorable Lord. As a father forgiveth his son, a friend his friend, a lover his beloved, even so should You forgive me, O DEVA.
Verse #45
अदृष्टपूर्वं हृषितः अस्मि दृष्ट्वा भयेन |
प्रव्यथितं मनः मे |
तत् एव मे दर्शय देव |
रूपं प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ||
adṛṣṭapūrvam hṛṣitaḥ asmi dṛṣṭvā bhayena |
ca pravyathitam manaḥ me |
tat eva me darśaya deva |
rūpam prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ||
adstapurvam hsita asmi dstva bhayena |
ca pravyathitam mana me |
tat eva me darsaya deva |
rupam prasida devesa jagannivasa ||
I am delighted, having seen what was never seen before; and (yet) my mind is distressed with fear. Show me your previous form only, O God; have mercy, O God of gods, O Abode of the Universe.
Verse #46
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रहस्तं इच्छामि |
त्वां द्रष्टुम् अहम् |
तथैव तेनैव रूपेण चतुर्भुजेन |
सहस्रबाहो भव विश्वमूर्ते ||
kirīṭinam gadinam cakrahastam icchāmi |
tvāṃ draṣṭum aham |
tathaiva tenaiva rūpeṇa caturbhujena |
sahasrabāho bhava viśvamūrte ||
kiritinam gadinam cakrahastam icchami |
tva drastum aham |
tathaiva tenaiva rupena caturbhujena |
sahasrabaho bhava visvamurte ||
I desire to see You as before, crowned, bearing a mace, with a discus in hand, in Your Former Form only, having four arms, O Thousand-armed, O Universal Form.
Verse #47
श्रीभगवानुवाच मया प्रसन्नेन तव |
अर्जुन इदं रूपं परं |
दर्शितम् आत्मयोगात् तेजोमयं विश्वम् |
अनन्तम् आद्यं यत् मे |
त्वत् अन्येन दृष्टपूर्वम् ||
śrībhagavānuvāca mayā prasannena tava |
arjuna idaṃ rūpam paraṃ |
darśitam ātmayogāt tejomayaṃ viśvam |
anantam ādyaṃ yat me |
tvad anyena na dṛṣṭapūrvam ||
sribhagavanuvaca maya prasannena tava |
arjuna ida rupam para |
darsitam atmayogat tejomaya visvam |
anantam adya yat me |
tvad anyena na dstapurvam ||
Blessed Lord said: Graciously by Me, O Arjuna, this Supreme-Form has been shown to you by My own YOGA-power --- Full of splendour, Primeval, Infinite, this Universal-Form of Mine has never been seen by any other than yourself .
Verse #48
वेदयज्ञाध्ययनैः दानैः |
क्रियाभिः तपोभिः |
उग्रैः एवंरूपः शक्यः अहम् नृलोके |
द्रष्टुम् त्वत् अन्येन कुरुप्रवीर ||
na vedayajñādhyayanair na dānaiḥ na |
ca kriyābhiḥ na tapobhiḥ |
ugraiḥ evaṃrūpaḥ śakyaḥ aham nṛloke |
draṣṭum tvad anyena kurupravīra ||
na vedayajnadhyayanair na danai na |
ca kriyabhi na tapobhi |
ugrai evarupa sakya aham nloke |
drastum tvad anyena kurupravira ||
Neither by the study of the VEDAS and sacrifices, nor by rituals, nor by severe austerities, can I be seen in this form in the world of men by any other than yourself, O great hero among the Kurus.
Verse #49
मा ते व्यथा मा विमूढभावः |
दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरम् ईदृक् मम |
इदम् व्यपेतभीः प्रीतमनाः पुनः त्वं तत् |
एव मे रूपम् इदम् प्रपश्य ||
mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvaḥ |
dṛṣṭvā rūpam ghoram īdṛk mama |
idam vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punaḥ tvaṃ tat |
eva me rūpam idam prapaśya ||
ma te vyatha ma ca vimuhabhava |
dstva rupam ghoram idk mama |
idam vyapetabhi pritamana puna tva tat |
eva me rupam idam prapasya ||
Be not afraid, nor bewildered on seeing such a terrible-Form of Mine as this; with your fear dispelled and with gladdened heart, now behold again this Form of Mine.
Verse #50
सञ्जय उवाच इति अर्जुनं |
वासुदेवः तथा उक्त्वा स्वकम् |
रूपम् दर्शयामास भूयः आश्वासयामास |
भीतम् एनम् भूत्वा |
पुनः सौम्यवपुः महात्मा ||
sañjaya uvāca arjunam |
vāsudevaḥ tathā uktvā svakam |
rūpam darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ āśvāsayāmāsa |
ca bhītam enam bhūtvā |
punaḥ saumyavapuḥ mahātmā ||
sanjaya uvaca arjunam |
vasudeva tatha uktva svakam |
rupam darsayamasa bhuya asvasayamasa |
ca bhitam enam bhutva |
puna saumyavapu mahatma ||
Sanjaya said: Having thus spoken to Arjuna, Vaasudeva again showed His own Form, and, the Great-souled One, assuming His gentle Form, consoled him who was so terrified.
Verse #51
अर्जुन उवाच दृष्ट्वा इदं मानुषं |
रूपं तव सौम्यं जनार्दन इदानीम् |
अस्मि संवृत्तः सचेताः प्रकृतिं गतः ||
arjuna uvāca dṛṣṭvā idaṃ mānuṣam |
rūpam tava saumyam janārdana idānīm |
asmi saṃvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṃ gataḥ ||
arjuna uvaca dstva ida manusam |
rupam tava saumyam janardana idanim |
asmi savtta saceta prakti gata ||
Arjuna said: Having seen this, Thy gentle human-Form, O Janardana, I am now composed and restored to my own nature.
Verse #52
श्रीभगवान् उवाच सुदुर्दर्शम् इदं रूपम् |
दृष्टवान् असि यत् मम देवाः |
अपि अस्य रूपस्य नित्यम् दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ||
śrībhagavān uvāca sudurdarśam idaṃ rūpam |
dṛṣṭavān asi yat mama devāḥ |
api asya rūpasya nityam darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ||
sribhagavan uvaca sudurdarsam ida rupam |
dstavan asi yat mama deva |
api asya rupasya nityam darsanakanksina ||
The Blessed Lord said: Very hard, indeed, it is to see this Form of Mine which you have seen. Even the gods are ever longing to behold this Form.
Verse #53
अहम् वेदैः तपसा दानेन |
इज्यया शक्यः एवंविधः द्रष्टुम् दृष्टवान् असि माम् यथा ||
na aham vedaiḥ na tapasā na dānena na ca |
ijyayā śakyaḥ evaṃvidhaḥ draṣṭum dṛṣṭavān asi mām yathā ||
na aham vedai na tapasa na danena na ca |
ijyaya sakya evavidha drastum dstavan asi mam yatha ||
Neither by the VEDAS, nor by austerity, nor by gift, nor by sacrifices can I be seen in this Form as you have seen Me (in your present mental condition).
Verse #54
भक्त्या त्व अनन्यया शक्य अहम् एवंविधः अर्जुन |
ज्ञातुम् द्रष्टुम् तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टुम् परन्तप ||
bhaktyā tva ananyayā śakya aham evaṃvidhaḥ arjuna |
jñātum draṣṭum ca tattvena praveṣṭum ca parantapa ||
bhaktya tva ananyaya sakya aham evavidha arjuna |
jnatum drastum ca tattvena pravestum ca parantapa ||
But, by single-minded devotion, can I, of this Form, be known and seen in reality, and also entered into, O Parantapa (O scorcher of your foes)!

मत्कर्मकृत् |
मत्परमः |
मद्भक्तः |
सङ्गवर्जितः |
निर्वैरः सर्वभूतेषु यः सः माम् एति पाण्डव ||

saṅgavarjitaḥ |
nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ saḥ mām eti pāṇḍava ||

nirvaira sarvabhutesu ya sa mam eti panava ||
He who does actions for Me, who looks upon Me as the Supreme, who is devoted to Me, who is free from attachment, who bears enmity towards none, he comes to Me, O Pandava.<br><br>Thus in the Upanishads of the glorious Bhagavad Gita, the science of the Eternal, the scripture of Yoga, the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Arjuna, ends the eleventh discourse entitled "The Yoga of the Cosmic Vision."
