A goddess and a form of Parvati, principally worshipped as the tutelary deity of Madurai. Her name means "fish-eyed" (from mīna, "fish", and akṣī, "eye"), signifying her graceful glance. She is revered as a powerful warrior queen who was later deified and married Lord Shiva (Sundareswarar) in a union celebrated annually at the famous Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple
