Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Verse #1
अग्ने नय सुपथा राये अस्मान् विश्वानि देव वयुनानि विद्वान् |
युयोधि अस्मत् जुहुराणम् एनः भूयिष्ठाम् ते नम उक्तिम् विधेम ||
agne naya supathā rāye asmān viśvāni deva vayunāni vidvān |
yuyodhi asmat juhurāṇam enaḥ bhūyiṣṭhām te nama uktim vidhema ||
agne naya supatha raye asman visvani deva vayunani vidvan |
yuyodhi asmat juhuranam ena bhuyistham te nama uktim vidhema ||
18. O Agni, lead us by the good path to the enjoyment of the fruits of our deeds, knowing O God, all our deeds. Remove the sin of deceit from within us. We offer thee many prostrations by word of mouth. (18).
Verse #2
पूर्णम् अदः पूर्णम् इदम् पूर्णात् पूर्णम् उदच्यते पूर्णस्य |
पूर्णम् आदाय पूर्णम् एव अवशिष्यते शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ||
oṃ pūrṇam adaḥ pūrṇam idam pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate pūrṇasya |
pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇam eva avaśiṣyate oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||
o purnam ada purnam idam purnat purnam udacyate purnasya |
purnam adaya purnam eva avasisyate o santi santi santi ||
The whole (Brahman) is all that is invisible. The whole (Brahman) is all that is visible. The whole (Hiranyagarbha) was born out of the whole (Brahman). When the whole (the Universe) is absorbed into the whole (Brahman) the whole alone (Brahman) remains.
Verse #3
[वास् इदम् सर्वम् यत्-किञ्च जगत्याम् जगत् तेन |
त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथाः मा गृधः कस्य-स्वित् धनम् ||
[vās idam sarvam yat-kiñca jagatyām jagat tena |
tyaktena bhuñjīthāḥ mā gṛdhaḥ kasya-svit dhanam ||
[vas idam sarvam yat-kinca jagatyam jagat tena |
tyaktena bhunjitha ma gdha kasya-svit dhanam ||
1. All this-whatsoever moves in this universe (and those that move not) is covered (indwelt or pervaded or enveloped or clothed) by the Lord. That renounced, enjoy. Do not covet anybody's wealth (Or - Do not covet, for whose is wealth?).
Verse #4
कुर्वन् एव् इह कर्माणि जिजीविषेत् शतगं समाः एवम् |
अन्यथा इतः अस्ति कर्म लिप्यते नरे ||
kurvan ev iha karmaani jijīviṣet śatagaṃ samāḥ evam |
na anyathā itaḥ asti na karma lipyate nare ||
kurvan ev iha karmaani jijiviset sataga sama evam |
na anyatha ita asti na karma lipyate nare ||
2. Should one wish to live a hundred years on this earth, he should live doing Karma. While thus, (as) man, you live, there is no way other than this by which Karma will not cling to you.
Verse #5
असुर्याः नाम ते लोकाः अन्धेन तमसा आवृता ताग्म् |
ते प्रेत्य अभिगच्छन्ति ये के च आत्म-हनः जनाः ||
asuryāḥ nāma te lokāḥ andhena tamasā āvṛtā tāgm |
te pretya abhigacchanti ye ke ca ātma-hanaḥ janāḥ ||
asurya nama te loka andhena tamasa avta tagm |
te pretya abhigacchanti ye ke ca atma-hana jana ||
3. Those births partake of the nature of the Asuras and are enveloped in blind darkness. After leaving the body they who kill their Atman attain them.
Verse #6
अनेजत् एकम् मनसः जवीयः एनत् देवाः आप्नुवन् पूर्वम् अर्षत् |
तत् धावतः अन्यान् अत्येति तिष्ठत् तस्मिन् अपः मातरिश्वा दधाति ||
anejat ekam manasaḥ javīyaḥ na enat devāḥ āpnuvan pūrvam arṣat |
tat dhāvataḥ anyān atyeti tiṣṭhat tasmin apaḥ mātariśvā dadhāti ||
anejat ekam manasa javiya na enat deva apnuvan purvam arsat |
tat dhavata anyan atyeti tisthat tasmin apa matarisva dadhati ||
4. It is motionless, one, faster than mind; and the Devas (the senses) could not overtake it which ran before. Sitting, it goes faster than those who run after it. By it, the all-pervading air (Sutratman) supports the activity of all living beings.
Verse #7
तत् एजति तत् एजति तत् दूरे तत् अन्तिके |
तत् अन्तः अस्य सर्वस्य तत् सर्वस्य अस्य बाह्यतः ||
tat ejati tat na ejati tat dūre tat u antike |
tat antaḥ asya sarvasya tat u sarvasya asya bāhyataḥ ||
tat ejati tat na ejati tat dure tat u antike |
tat anta asya sarvasya tat u sarvasya asya bahyata ||
5. It moves, it is motionless. It is distant, it is near. It is within all, it is without all this.
Verse #8
यः तु सर्वाणि भूतानि आत्मनि एव अनुपश्यति |
सर्वभूतेषु आत्मानम् ततः विजुगुप्सते ||
yah tu sarvāṇi bhūtāni ātmani eva anupaśyati |
sarvabhūteṣu ca ātmānam tataḥ na vijugupsate ||
yah tu sarvani bhutani atmani eva anupasyati |
sarvabhutesu ca atmanam tata na vijugupsate ||
6. Who sees everything in his Atman and his Atman in everything, by that he feels no revulsion.
Verse #9
यस्मिन् सर्वाणि भूतानि आत्मा एव अभूत् विजानतः |
तत्र कः मोहः कः शोकः एकत्वम् अनुपश्यतः ||
yasmin sarvāṇi bhūtāni ātmā eva abhūt vijānataḥ |
tatra kaḥ mohaḥ kaḥ śokaḥ ekatvam anupaśyataḥ ||
yasmin sarvani bhutani atma eva abhut vijanata |
tatra ka moha ka soka ekatvam anupasyata ||
7. When to the knower, all Bhutas become one with his own Atman, what perplexity, what grief, is there when he sees this oneness.
Verse #10
सः पर्यगात् शुक्रम् अकायम् अव्रणम् अस्नाविरग्म् शुद्धम् अपापविद्धम् कविः |
मनीषी परिभूः स्वयम्भूः याथातथ्यतः अर्थान व्यदधात् शाश्वतीभ्यः समाभ्यः ||
saḥ paryagāt śukram akāyam avraṇam asnāviragm śuddham apāpaviddham kaviḥ |
manīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūḥ yāthātathyataḥ arthān vyadadhāt śāśvatībhyaḥ samābhyaḥ ||
sa paryagat sukram akayam avranam asnaviragm suddham apapaviddham kavi |
manisi paribhu svayambhu yathatathyata arthan vyadadhat sasvatibhya samabhya ||
8. He pervaded all, resplendent, bodiless, scatheless, having no muscles, pure, untouched by sin; far-seeing, omniscient, transcendent, self-sprung, (he) duly allotted to the various eternal creators their respective functions.
Verse #11
अन्धम् तमः प्रविशन्ति ये अविद्याम् उपासते ततः भूयः |
इव ते तमः ये विद्यायाग्म् रताः ||
andham tamaḥ praviśanti ye avidyām upāsate tataḥ bhūyaḥ |
iva te tamaḥ ye u vidyāyāgm ratāḥ ||
andham tama pravisanti ye avidyam upasate tata bhuya |
iva te tama ye u vidyayagm rata ||
9. They who worship Avidya alone fall into blind darkness; and they who worship Vidya alone fall into even greater darkness.
Verse #12
अन्यत् एव आहुः विद्यया अन्यत् आहुः अविद्यया |
इति शुश्रुम धीराणाम् ये नः तत् विचचक्षिरे ||
anyat eva āhuḥ vidyayā anyat āhuḥ avidyayā |
iti śuśruma dhīrāṇām ye naḥ tat vicacakṣire ||
anyat eva ahu vidyaya anyat ahu avidyaya |
iti susruma dhiranam ye na tat vicacaksire ||
10. One result is predicated of Vidya and another of Avidya. We have so heard from wise men who taught us both Vidya and Avidya.
Verse #13
विद्याम् अविद्याम् यः तत् वेद उभयग्म् |
सह अविद्यया मृत्युम् तीर्त्वा विद्यया अमृतम् अश्नुते ||
vidyām ca avidyām ca yah tat veda ubhayagm |
saha avidyayā mṛtyum tīrtvā vidyayā amṛtam ashnute ||
vidyam ca avidyam ca yah tat veda ubhayagm |
saha avidyaya mtyum tirtva vidyaya amtam ashnute ||
11. He who simultaneously knows both Vidya and Avidya gets over Death by Avidya and attains immortality by Vidya.
Verse #14
अन्धम् तमः प्रविशन्ति ये असम्भूतिम् उपासते ततः भूयः |
इव ते तमः सम्भूत्याग्म् रताः ||
andham tamaḥ praviśanti ye asambhūtim upāsate tataḥ bhūyaḥ |
iva te tamaḥ ya u sambhūtyāgm ratāḥ ||
andham tama pravisanti ye asambhutim upasate tata bhuya |
iva te tama ya u sambhutyagm rata ||
12. They fall into blind darkness who worship the unborn Prakriti. They fall into greater darkness who are bent upon the Karya Brahman Hiranyagarbha. (12).
Verse #15
अन्यत् एव आहुः सम्भवात् अन्यत् आहुः असम्भवात् |
इति शुश्रुम धीराणाम् ये नः तत् विचचक्षिरे ||
anyat eva āhuḥ sambhavāt anyat āhuḥ asambhavāt |
iti śuśruma dhīrāṇām ye naḥ tat vicacakṣire ||
anyat eva ahu sambhavat anyat ahu asambhavat |
iti susruma dhiranam ye na tat vicacaksire ||
13. They say one thing results from the worship of Hiranyagarbha and another from the worship of Prakriti. We have thus heard it stated by wise preceptors who taught us that.
Verse #16
सम्भूतिम् विनाशम् यः तत् वेद उभयग्म् |
सह विनाशेन मृत्युम् तीर्त्वा सम्भूत्या अमृतम् अश्नुते ||
sambhūtim ca vināśam ca yah tat veda ubhayagm |
saha vināśena mṛtyum tīrtvā sambhūtyā amṛtam ashnute ||
sambhutim ca vinasam ca yah tat veda ubhayagm |
saha vinasena mtyum tirtva sambhutya amtam ashnute ||
14. Those who worship the unmanifested Prakriti and Hiranyagarbha (Destruction) together, get over death through the worship of Hiranyagarbha and attain immortality through the worship of Prakriti.
Verse #17
हिरण्मयेन पात्रेण सत्यस्य अपिहितम् मुखम तत् |
त्वम् पूषन् अपावृणु सत्यधर्माय दृष्टये ||
hiraṇmayena pātreṇa satyasya apihitam mukham tat |
tvam pūṣan apāvṛṇu satyadharmāya dṛṣṭaye ||
hiranmayena patrena satyasya apihitam mukham tat |
tvam pusan apavnu satyadharmaya dstaye ||
15. The entrance of the True is covered as if by a golden vessel. Remove, O sun, the covering that I who have been worshipping “The True” may behold it.
Verse #18
पूषन् एकर्षे यम सूर्य प्राजापत्य व्यूह रश्मीन् समूह तेजः यत् ते रूपम् |
कल्याणतमम् तत् ते पश्यामि यः असौ असौ पुरुषः सः अहम् अस्मि ||
pūṣan ekarṣe yama sūrya prājāpatya vyūha raśmīn samūha tejaḥ yat te rūpam |
kalyāṇatamam tat te paśyāmi yah asau asau puruṣaḥ saḥ aham asmi ||
pusan ekarse yama surya prajapatya vyuha rasmin samuha teja yat te rupam |
kalyanatamam tat te pasyami yah asau asau purusa sa aham asmi ||
16. O Sun, sole traveller of the Heavens, controller of all, Surya, son of Prajapati remove thy rays and gather up thy burning light. I behold thy glorious form; I am he, the Purusha within thee.
Verse #19
वायुः अनिलम् अमृतम् अथ इदम् भस्मान्तग्म् शरीरम् |
क्रतो स्मर कृतग्म् स्मर क्रतो स्मर कृतग्म् स्मर ||
vāyuḥ anilam amṛtam atha idam bhasmāntagm śarīram oṃ |
krato smara kṛtagm smara krato smara kṛtagm smara ||
vayu anilam amtam atha idam bhasmantagm sariram o |
krato smara ktagm smara krato smara ktagm smara ||
17. (Let my) Prana melt into the all-pervading Air, the eternal Sutratman; and let this body he burnt by fire to ashes; Om. O mind, remember, remember my deeds; O mind, remember, remember my deeds.
