Shri Durga Chalisa
Salutations to you, O Mother Durga, the bestower of all happiness.
Salutations to you, O Mother Durga, the remover of all sorrows.
Your divine light is formless and supreme.
Its radiance spreads throughout the three worlds (heaven, earth, and the netherworld).
Your forehead shines like the moon, and your face is majestic.
Your eyes are red, and your brow is fearsome to behold.
O Mother, your form is exceedingly beautiful.
The sight of you brings immense joy to your devotees.
You created the entire universe with your divine power.
For its sustenance, you provide food and wealth.
As Goddess Annapurna, you nourish the whole world.
You are also the primordial, beautiful maiden.
At the time of universal dissolution, you are the one who destroys all.
You are Gauri, the beloved consort of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva and all the yogis sing your praises.
Brahma, Vishnu, and all the gods meditate on you constantly.
You also took the form of Goddess Saraswati,
To grant divine wisdom to the sages and save them.
You took the form of Narsimha, O Mother,
And burst forth by tearing open the pillar.
You protected your devotee Prahlad,
And sent the demon Hiranyakashipu to his end.
You take the form of Goddess Lakshmi in the world,
And reside beside Lord Narayana (Vishnu).
You dwell in the Ocean of Milk,
O Ocean of Mercy, please fulfill my heart's desires.
In Hinglaj, you are known as Bhavani.
Your glory is limitless and cannot be described.
You are Matangi and Dhumavati Mata.
You are Bhuvaneshwari and Bagala, the givers of joy.
You are Shri Bhairavi and Tara, who saves the world.
As Chhinnamasta, you remove the sorrows of existence.
Your mount, the lion, is resplendent, O Bhavani.
The brave Langur (Hanuman) walks ahead as your guard.
In your hands, you hold a skull-cup and a sword.
Seeing this form, even the God of Death flees in fear.
You are adorned with weapons and a trident.
The sight of which pierces the enemy's heart with fear.
You reside in Nagarkot (a famous Shakti Peeth).
Your triumph resounds through the three worlds.
You slayed the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha.
And you destroyed the thousands of Raktbeej demons.
The demon-king Mahishasur was filled with immense pride,
The Earth trembled under the weight of his sins.
You then assumed the terrifying form of Kalika,
And along with your army, you annihilated him.
Whenever your saints and devotees fell into great trouble,
You always came to their aid, O Mother.
In the celestial city of the gods and the realm of Indra,
All live without sorrow because of your glory.
Your eternal flame shines brightly in Jwala Ji.
Men and women forever worship you there.
Those who sing your praises with love and devotion,
Sorrow and poverty do not come near them.
The one who meditates on you with a focused mind,
Is liberated from the cycle of birth and death.
All yogis, gods, and sages proclaim,
That spiritual union (Yoga) is impossible without your power.
The great sage Shankaracharya performed severe penance,
He had conquered all desire and anger.
Day and night, he meditated on Lord Shiva,
But he never remembered you, not even for a moment.
He failed to understand the mystery of your divine power (Shakti).
When his own power left him, his soul was filled with regret.
He took refuge in you and sang your praises,
"Victory, Victory, Victory to you, O Jagadambika, O Bhavani!"
Then the Primal Mother of the Universe became pleased,
And without delay, she restored his power.
O Mother, I am surrounded by immense troubles.
Who but you can remove my sorrow?
Hopes and desires constantly torment me.
My foolish enemies try to frighten me.
Destroy my enemies, O great Queen.
I remember you with a one-pointed mind, O Bhavani.
Bestow your grace, O merciful Mother.
Bless me with wealth, prosperity, and success and make me blissful.
As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of your compassion.
And may I always sing of your glory.
Whoever sings this Durga Chalisa,
Will enjoy all worldly pleasures and attain the supreme, eternal abode.
Says Devidas, knowing I am in your refuge,
Please bestow your grace upon me, O Mother of the Universe, Bhavani.
